Backpacking Oz can give you so much more than dirty, crowded hostels and cheap goon-wine. With some help of Patrik (the operator of this site), a couple of hunting magazines and plain luck I managed to do some hunting both in NSW and NT. In NSW I hunted and shot a couple of grey 'roos and foxes. There were also a good number of hares and rabbits, however I never hunted them.
In NT I was very lucky and managed to get a job that meant that I worked for free and in exchange I was offered to hunt instead of receiving a salary. I shot a young, wounded rusa deer (actually I just put it down from a distance of perhaps 14 metres with a .44 mag Ruger pistol). I also shoot a couple of wallabies to have as dog meat and finally a really nice boar. The boar was taken with the .44 mag pistol and home made lead bullets. The first shot was taken from appr. 20 metres and hit the pig a bit (~ 2-3 cm) to high in the shoulder. The pig went of and to make a long story short I finished him of in a distance of 1,5 metres when he turned around in the waist high grass and started to charge me instead of me charging him! I can tell you that it was a nerve thrillling moment!
The last day I went after a 3 year old buffalo with its tips cut of...me and Kevin followed it for 40 minutes but couldn't get a clear shot with the .44 mag and since daylight were fading we had to quit the hunt. Still today I regret i didn't took the shot with the .375 H&H winchester rifle Kevin had brought a long as well as the pistol...but as Kevin said "it would have been to easy". I hope i get another opportunity sometime in the future and that Diana, the mother of all hunters, will be more generous then!
