A former Memphian hunting for deer in Canada was mauled to death by a grizzly bear a few days after Thanksgiving.
Don "Pete" Peters, who moved north about three years ago after marrying a Canadian woman, was missing for three days before being found dead about 50 miles west of Sundre, a region in Alberta not too far from Calgary.
"It was a freak accident," said Grace Shepherd, his sister, who lives near Millington. "They think that he was walking down a logging trail. They found a deer in the woods. ... They think the bear had killed it and my brother walked up on it."
The tragedy began to unfold on Nov. 25, when the 51-year-old Peters failed to return from a solo hunting excursion for white-tailed deer.
Family, friends and Canadian authorities grew concerned, mounting an intensive search of the area.
Three days later, searchers found Peters' remains, not far from his truck. Bear tracks were found near the body and an autopsy proved that a grizzly mauled Peters, according to the Calgary Herald.
