The finspitz Rex, is an experienced barking tree dog. He is six years old and he knows what is expected of him.I had borrowed him for two weeks and had had plenty of contacts with the capercailzie. But Diana hadn’t been with me so far. I had just started the hunting; it was still several hours till lunchtime.Rex had pushed three capercailzies and found them again, but they flew short after he started to bark.Rex came running back towards me. He was still aprox. 150 meters away, when another 3 capercailzies flew up between us. The three, all young males, flew over Rex. Two sat in a tree, a short distance, from him, and the third disappeared over the treetops. Rex found the two males quickly and barkt furiously at them. One of them got anxious and flew, while the other sat still. I started my stealth walk. I went behind several thick fur trees and then began to crawl. After 50 meters I didn’t dare to move any closer. I was now 30 meters from the tree, where Rex was barking. I scouted the tree but didn’t see the bird. Where was it?Suddenly a small movement cought my eye, and the capercailzie was sighted. I lay down in the soft undergrowth and with a deep breath I raised my rifle. When the aim was steady I squished the trigger…Rex stopped barking as he heard the shot and saw the capercailzie fall through the branches. The big bird hit the ground with a thud and Rex started to lick at the feathers.
It was a good day.
