The red deer can be found in the Brisbane river valley (Queensland) and the Mary river system. It is the second largest deer in Australia, only the sambar deer is bigger.

Red deer have a short period of intense breeding activity which is known as the rutting season, 'the rut' or 'the roar'. It occurs in the early autumn and there is great competition between the mature stags for the available hinds.
