Goat on the South island

The goat is hardy, thrives on rough grazing, reproduces rapidly and is a ready source of meat and milk. These are qualities that led to its introduction into New Zealand. Special breeds were introduced later for their mohair and cashmere fibres and, recently, for their meat (boer goat). In very high numbers the goat is devastating. it removes virtually all foliage below 1.8 metres. The goat is quite easy to hunt. You can often hear the herds when they are approaching you.

Head and body length 120-162 cm (males) 114-147 cm (females) Weight: 16-79 kg (male) 15-66 kg (female)
