The buffalos were introduced in Australia in 1825 as domestic animals but became feral. The buffalo spread and became an environmental disaster. In 1985 the Northern Territory had a population of 341 000 buffaloes. The government has eradicated many thousands buffalo. The Kakadu National Park population went from 20,000 to 200 in 1996.
Today, the best area is Arnhemland.
They are very big animals and a bull can weigh up to 1100 kg (more than 2000 pounds). They have large horns and the spread can be almost 2 metres.
The buffalo is known for being very dangerous when wounded. Heavy calibres is a must and the bullet must be placed correctly. Otherwise, you might be in big trouble.
The buffalos have daily schedules. They normally stay in the same area with a drinking point, camping areas, and rubbing trees. The best time to hunt water buffalo is during the dry season, from June to October.
Safari Club International scores a trophy by measuring the length of each horn, the circumference of each horn base, then adding all numbers together. The record is 140.
