The goat is hardy, thrives on rough grazing, reproduces rapidly and is a ready source of meat and milk. These are qualities that led to its introduction into Australia by the First Fleet in 1788 and on many subsequent occasions. Special breeds were introduced later for their mohair and cashmere fibres and, recently, for their meat (boer goat). In very high numbers the goat is devastating. it removes virtually all foliage below 1.8 metres. The goat is quite easy to hunt. You can often hear the herds when they are approaching you.
Goats can be found in most states, for example Queensland. North Golbourn island, outside the coast of Northern territory is famous for producing goats with very large trophies.
