Early South Pacific explorer, Captain Cook is credited with introducing pigs into New Zealand. These animals have thrived in the native bush conditions. Pig hunting is a traditional sport for many New Zealanders. It is typically done with specially bred pig dogs. Wild pork is enjoyed by the Maori peoples; it is relished as part of a “hangi” (meal cooked on hot stones in a pit).
A large boar (male) grows to about 100 kilos with tusks up to 3 to 4 inches. They are usually black, occasionally one with gingery or white markings is found.
Wild boar are very aggressive and many pig dogs have been killed in the pursuit of a running boar.
